West of Myre borough centre rise the majestic peaks of Skogsøya, isle of traditions. The island was formerly the centre of Øksnes borough. It was here that the parson, the sheriff, and the doctor lived, and from here Øksnes borough was administered. The building of roads resulted in moving of public offices, the medical centre, and the administration to Myre. When the boroughs of Øksnes and Langenes were fused in 1964, the new borough administration kept the name Øknes, the name of the parish grounds on Skogsøya.
