Sigerfjord - Founded on fish and cargo freighting |

An oasis in Vesterålen |

Warmly tucked away from cold sea winds, Sigerfjord’s locarion gives it an average temperature that is significantly higher than in the rest of the district. This favours plant life that does not nomally thrive or bear fruit so far north. In Sigerfjord, ripe apples can be harvested even after inclement summers! About 1880, there were only 6 - 8 families living in Sigerfjord, but some 30 years later, the population had climbed to 600 and the town had attained a leading position in Sortland municipality. The rapid development was due to the establishment, and profitable consequences, of the Hindøens Steamship Company, the unrestricted turnover of properties, and the unrestrained founding of new businesses.
