The Axe Gash
Raftsundet is the main maritime course between Lofoten and Vesterålen. Along the narrow sound, one can see several buildings and docks of old trading stations. With the development of land communications, these once vital docking places became remote outposts. The rural settlements and the breathtaking natural surroundings, however, are still fantastic experiences, and the greatest of these is undeniably Troll fjord.
No other place in Vesterålen has been so thoroughly photographed, filmed and painted as Trollfjord, this two kilomi\etre long gash of the axe i Raftsundet’s western row of peaks. When one has experienced it, the reasons are clear; it is bewitching, narrow and incredibly beautiful - a natural attraction beyond compare in an area where tourists came, almost before the word "tourism" was invented.
