Sami vestiges in Holmstaddal
As you wander around the countryside in Vesterålen, it will be difficult to spot traces of early reindeer herding. It is also true that in our area this activity was not very widespread, either.
It should be added that herding was done closely in pact with nature; it was an environmentally friendly activity. In Holmstaddalen, in Sortland Municipality, however, there are a few relatively recent cultural traces that bear witness to the fact that the Samis also herded reindeer on the land here.

This turf-hut shelter at Reinhaugen in Holmstaddalen was on the verge of disintegration. Now this rare vestige of the past has been saved for posterity.
