Andenes
is situated at the north end of the island Andøya, on a headland pointing
out in the open sea, and it has been marked by its exposed location. In
the 16th and 17th centuries, the Dutch set out on
whaling expeditions from here. Later, Andenes became a base for foreign
fishermen – both from the east and the west. In modern times, it is a
base for defence. Its northern position has changed this fishing station
into a NATO base.
