In
the 17th century, the price of grain increased
drastically in relation to the price of stockfish. Fishing often
went wrong too, so that people were forced to depend more on
agriculture. In this period, Alsvåg flouriched, because, by
Vesterålen standards, this farmland was rich and fertile.
Alsvåg
Farm eventually came to play many roles. Today, the manor house is a
museum in the midst of an active cultural community. The museum
buildings are on the top of a large mound, wich consists partly of
the remains of settlements for several centuries.
In
addition to agriculture, trade, and freight shipping, many other
activities have been connected with Alsvåg farm. For example, it
was seat of Langenes Administrative District (fjerding). From 1818,
there was a school on the farm grounds for 80 years. In about 1850,
Alsvåg became a regular place of call for steamers. A quay was
built, and there was a waiting room in Alsvåg Farm, which also
housed a post office, telephone exchange, doctor’s office, a shop,
and a fish receiving station. |
